Purpose of Establishment of the Peace Education Research Forum Japan

Peace education in Japan has been widely practiced since the end of World War II until today. Although there are many individual peace education theories and practices, their academic organization is not sufficient. For the development of peace education, it is necessary to develop an academic field that can be called "peace education research," rather than keeping peace education as a discrete theory and practice.

The aim of the Peace Education Research Forum is to study the practice and theory of peace education, and to systematize academic knowledge to support the practice of peace education from a theoretical perspective. From an academic standpoint, it is aimed that the systematization of peace education will be promoted and developed as "Peace Education Research".

The 10th Forum on Peace Education

Theme: "How to Envision Peace Education in Times of Crisis"

Purpose of the theme

Today, when we are witnessing horrific armed conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza, and tensions are rising in international relations in East Asia, a tough question is being asked: What is peace education doing? There are also various other serious issues such as hate, discrimination, global warming, and so on. Indeed, peace education in Japan has made great achievements in fostering citizens who oppose all wars and respect peace.

On the other hand, we need to reflect on the question of whether we have succeeded in fostering global citizens who can solve problems that transcend national borders and contribute to world peace. What should be done now for peace education in Japan? And how should we envision peace education in the future?

In the international peace education research community, transnational organizing and solidarity are being promoted, sharing global issues, such as the publication of the Journal of Peace Education (JPE) (2004-) and the online gathering of about 300 peace educators from around the world held in response to the pandemic of the new coronavirus.

Werner Wintersteiner (EURED, Austria), a keynote speaker at the conference and a leader in international peace education research, will talk about the latest trends and future prospects via live online webcast from Austria. Questions are welcome. Let's learn what peace education can do in times of various international crises.

   Reflection Sheet
Question, "Please describe your ideas for developing peace pedagogy in the future."

Translation

・I think it would be good to build on these exchanges.

・I thought it was also important to have a simple dialogue. I have recently felt that there are issues before workshops in practice.

・ I thought "juxtaposition of diversity" was important. I also felt that it is important to trace the historical background of each juxtaposition. I believe that the ways in which everyone gathered in this forum perceives "studies," "pedagogy," and "peace education" are much more diverse, and I look forward to hearing more of your backgrounds in the future.

・Building a network of various people. We believe that is the place to start.
Establishing a Peace Education Society.

・We would like to invite Peace Educators from overseas and expand our exchange.

・Using the field of education to connect various academic fields. I felt that it is important to have a place where various studies are multiplied and utilized to advance peace education (or to identify and address impediments), rather than a place where related studies are brought together for the sake of peace. To this end, we need to look for what is going well in peace education (the good parts that have been accumulated to date), as well as specific issues for the future and solutions to these issues. How to make the roles of practice (educational field) and theory (research institutions) complementary is also a necessary discussion.

・Since researchers working on a variety of studies have gathered here, it would be good to promote efforts to give shape to these studies, such as by updating dictionaries and publications.

・In peace education practice, methods have become more important in recent years, but there is also a need for a deeper understanding of the content.
